DESCRIBE DETENTE AND ITS EFFECTS
Detente Policy
|
ANALYZE: Thought the Detente Policy offered a temporary fix it never actually sowed a solution. Therefore there was still tensions between the countries. There was less turmoil then before, but it was only a matter of time before there was violence again.
End of Detente
- By the early 80's tensions began to rise again
- Relations were beginning to deteriorate
- Full diplomatic relations between US and China established
- US sold weapons to Chinese military
- Soviet intervened on an exchange and stopped ratification of SALT
- US created economic sanctions
- US and Vietnam, Soviet and Afghan had political and military setbacks
- Shifted political and military superpowers
ANALYZE: As predicted Detente began to prove to be less and less helpful. After the US began having relationships with China the Soviet Union recalled the SALT Treaty which caucused new problems between them. Both countries began to have setbacks which began to become an issue.
US in Vietnam
|
ANALYZE: US began to get involved in Vietnam which caused a great rift in the superpowers. As the war began to get bigger the US decided it was best to stay away and not get involved, They withdrew from the war and it was officially ended with peace accords.
Soviet Union in Afghanistan
- Afghanistan was member of the Non-Aligned Movement
- Soviet coup caused them into the Cold War
- People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) came into power
- Lots of resistance towards the new policies
- Soviet Union is beginning to intervene
ANALYZE: Even though Afghanistan tried to stay out of the war it was eventually dragged into it unwillingly. The people of Afghanistan tried to fight back but their attempts were fruitless for many years. The intervention of the Soviets is causing more and more tensions throughout the country.
Afghanistan under Babrak Karmal
|
ANALYZE: By now the US and Soviet Union are not on good terms. The US is helping Afghanistan destroy The Soviet Union. By providing weapons to shoot at Soviet Warriors it erases all possible thought of the originally Detente Policy and SALT Treaty.
Afghanistan under Muhammad Najibullah
- In 1986 Muhammad Najibullah replaced Karmal
- In charge of Afghan secret police
- UN declared a cease fire causing Soviets to withdraw
- Fighting continued
- The Taliban captured Afghan capital, Kabul
- Made Afghan an Islamic state
- Superpowers overextended the influence they possessed
- The war reveled weaknesses of the superpowers
ANALYZE: The new Soviet Leader had a lot of controversy as well. The war was getting out of hand which caused the UN to step in. If the UN wouldn't have stepped in the war would have gotten out of control and the Soviets would have continued taking more and more countries.
