Conflict Between Arabs and Israel

- Due to the presence of Israel in the midst of Arab-Islamic states, there was the occurrence of political turmoil.
- Israel: became an ally of the United States, causing most of the Islamic states to be disconcerted
- 1967: Arab-Israeli war: Israel defeated Egypt and Syria
- 1973: Arab-Israeli war, or Yom-Kippur: Israel victory
- For the reason that the Arabs made the attack on Israel on a major Jewish holy day, known as Yom-Kippur, it was named Yom-Kippur by Israel.
- Anwar Sadat
- Replaced Nasser as the President of Egypt
- Initiated the Yom-Kippur attack on Israel
- 1976: Renounced his nation's friendship treaty with the Soviet Union
- 1977: Traveled to Israel in an attempt to break the dead end in the negotiations
- 1978-1980: Leaders of Egypt and Israel signed peace treaties
- Signed a peace treaty with Israel, which did not work out well with the rest of the Arab nations
- Facilitated the peace process with the help of the United States
- 1981: After Sadat was assassinated by opponents of his policies toward Israel, the Arab states, along with the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) worked to isolate Egypt
- PLO, or Palestinian Liberation Organization: political organization that served as a government in exile for Palestinian displaced from Israel
- Was created under the leadership of Yasser Arafat (Israeli Prime Minister) in 1964, in order to promote Palestinian rights
- 1993-1995: Signed peace treaties--limited the amount of land
- Worked to isolate Egypt from the rest of the countries
- 1993 & 1995: Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, signed peace treaties that put forth of the notion of the limited Palestinian self-rule in Israeli-occupied territories
- 1994: Assassination of Rabin
